CIVITAS FORUM in Gdynia “shaping the mobility of tomorrow”

Together with Gdansk and Sopot, Gdynia forms a competitive Tri-City Metropolis located in northern Poland, which belongs to the most diverse urban areas in Poland. Gdynia is widely known for its dedication in implementing sustainable development solution. i.e. transport plans, clean energy initiatives and in citizen engagement. Moreover, the city has been recognised for its commitment as the winner of many national and European awards in the field of transport.

On 28-30 Sepetmber the Civitas Forum Conference 2016 was held in Gdynia at the Pomeranian Science and Technology Park Conference Centre. The Civitas Forum organised under the theme "shaping the mobility of tomorrow" offered innovative workshops, numerous state-of-the-art presentations and absorbing site visits. The Forum gathered a record 500 participants from all over the world, i.e. Japan, Israel, Belarus, Luxemburg and EU member states.

TENTacle representatives took part in city mobility subjects which foster to create a new model of cooperation between public and private sector, in order to find common solution on viewing the transport in urban node as a wide range of economic and social activities involving both sectors. Gdynia aims at  a holistic vision of a high quality city which operates efficiently with strong interconnections between transport and other sectors, as well as new technologies. A very sharp example during Civitas Forum came from Gothenburg, Sweden. This city experienced a transition from “a large town to a green and close” one. Today it represents an accessible regional centre with an attractive urban space and a logistic centre of Scandinavia. Using traffic models and data, congestion charges and diversifying dialogue helped the city in lowering car traffic, lowering emissions and improving quality of life.  Another good practices came from endorsed city logistics models in Italy, Israel and Ireland. Most enriching tool is establishing Urban Logistics Consultation Forum (acquaintance with the different stakeholders; discussion and shared development of tools; reaching a consensus), engaging most powerful stakeholders in the forum (private and public), creating a logistic roadmap (tools for tackling the major problems, propositions etc.) and establishing a win-win scheme. It is important to “carry out pilot projects in cooperation with the private market in order to create a change that benefits both the businesses and the public.”
